Student Quick Start Guide

What Is Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor?

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure web browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. It prevents printing, copying, accessing other websites, or opening additional applications during an exam. If your Canvas quiz or exam requires LockDown Browser, you will not be able to open it with a standard web browser.

Respondus Monitor works alongside LockDown Browser and uses your webcam to record you during non-proctored exams. Your instructor will let you know if Respondus Monitor is required.

Before You Begin

  • Use a Windows or Mac computer (not Chromebook unless your instructor specifies).
  • Ensure a stable internet connection.
  • Close all other programs before starting.
  • Have a working webcam and microphone if required.

Download & Install LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is already installed on Regent University’s on-campus computer labs. If you are taking a test in Canvas on your personal laptop or computer, download and install Respondus LockDown Browser using the institution-specific link. The installation is quick, secure, and only needs to be done once per device.

Students must log in through Canvas to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser. This ensures proper authentication and avoids DUO login issues.

To Install:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Open your course and click on a quiz or exam that requires Respondus.
  3. When prompted, click Download Respondus LockDown Browser and follow the installation instructions.

Note: Do not install Respondus LockDown Browser from any other website or source. Always access it through Canvas to ensure the correct version for Regent University. If LockDown Browser is already installed, you can skip to the next section. However, if you’ve previously installed Respondus LockDown Browser, uninstall any older version before downloading and installing the new one.

Once installed, look for the LockDown Browser icon on your desktop or in your Applications folder.
