(Resolving the “Click to view full discussion” error in SpeedGrader)

You may encounter a “Click to view full discussion” error when using SpeedGrader for Canvas Discussion Boards. To ensure the discussion is properly configured for grading, follow the steps below:

  1. Access Discussion Settings: Open the discussion and verify that it is marked as a graded assignment, and that a Group Set is associated (if applicable).

  2. Identify the Group Set (if used): If the discussion is intended for group participation, note the name of the assigned Group Set.

  3. Go to the People Tab: In the course’s left-hand navigation menu, click People.

  4. Check Group Set Tabs: At the top of the “People” page, you’ll see multiple tabs representing different Group Sets. The default tab is usually labeled Everyone. Others may have been created manually (Group 1, Group 2, etc.).

  5. Locate the Appropriate Group Set: Click the tab corresponding to the Group Set linked to the discussion.

  6. Verify Group Configuration: If a list of student names appears on the left, it means the groups have not been correctly configured. Students need to be placed into separate groups within the Group Set for the assignment to work as intended.

  7. Review Other Group Sets (if needed): Check other tabs to find a Group Set where students are already properly grouped. If one exists, note its name.

  8. Return to the Discussion: Go back to the discussion and click Edit.

  9. Temporarily Unlink Grading: Uncheck the Graded option and click Save.
(Note: Grades already entered will be preserved.)

  10. Edit the Discussion Again: Reopen the discussion and click Edit.

  11. Update the Group Set: Assign the correctly configured Group Set identified earlier.

  12. Re-enable Grading: Recheck the Graded option, set the point value, and click Save.

  13. Check SpeedGrader (Again): You should now be able to view individual student submissions in SpeedGrader, resolving the earlier error.
