Purpose: To give students an opportunity to check their draft versions of their assignments for plagiarism before final submission using TurnItIn.

  1. Log Into Canvas: Choose the relevant course.

  2. Navigate to Assignments: Click "Assignments" from the left navigation menu.

  3. Create a New Assignment: Click on the + Assignment button.

    • Name: Enter a descriptive name like "Turnitin Rough Draft Check."

    • Instructions: Inform students that this is for checking drafts and is not graded. 
      Example note: "Use this link to submit your rough drafts and check for plagiarism before your final submission. This assignment will not be graded."

    • Points: Set to 0.

    • Assignment Group: Select the appropriate assignment or select "Individual Assignments".

    • Display Grade as: Choose "Points."

    • Exclude from Final Grade: Check/select "Do not count this assignment towards the final grade."

  4. Set Submission Type: Choose "Online."
  5. Choose Online Entry Options: Enable "Text Entry" and "File Uploads."

  6. Allow Unlimited Submission Attempts: Set "Submission Attempts" to "Unlimited."

  7. Enable Turnitin for Plagiarism Review:

    • Select "Turnitin" from the "Plagiarism Review" drop-down.

    • Uncheck "Index all submissions."

        8. Save and Publish: Make sure to publish the assignment and ensure it's accessible to students.

  • Communicate with Students: Make sure students are aware of this resource, emphasizing that it is non-graded.
