Setting up Groups in Canvas

Group sets contain the different groups within a course. To create Groups within a Group Set and link to an assignment or discussion use the following steps:

1. Open your course in Canvas and locate and click the “People” option on your left navigation.

2. In the upper right corner click on “+Group Set”

3. A pop up window will appear called “Create Group Set”. Fill out the group name (Groups), leave the Self assign option unchecked, and leave “Group Structure” as create groups later and click save.

4. There will now be a Groups tab and the option to create a group. Click on the “+Group” button to create a new group.

5. Name the group and set a limit for how many members you want and click save.

6. There will be a list of Unassigned Students. From this list click the “+” to the right of their name and add them to the group you want.

7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to make 4 groups within the Group Set.

Note: Make sure to create a Group Set with 4 Groups and link them to the Discussion/Assignment in the master shell. This will insure that the Discussion/Assignment will also be setup correctly after the course copy to the live shells.
